Where to Buy an Authentic Puka Shell Necklace (And How to Spot a Fake)

Most puka shell necklaces sold today are actually shell chips. Here's how to tell the difference, where to buy the real thing, and how to care for it.

Say the words puka shell necklace and most people picture the same thing: a strand of small, off-white shells sitting close to the collarbone. What they do not know is that maybe one in twenty of those necklaces on the market is a real Hawaiian puka. The rest are shell chips, cut and drilled to look similar. Both can be beautiful. But if the word authentic matters to you, this is the guide.

What Makes a Puka Shell Authentic?

A real puka shell is the naturally worn-down tip of a cone snail, tumbled smooth and pierced through the middle by the ocean itself. Puka is Hawaiian for hole. No drilling. No machining. Just the tide slowly grinding the top spiral of the shell away until a small ring with a natural centre hole remains.

Real pukas come primarily from the beaches of Oahu and Kauai. They are collected by hand, one shell at a time, by people who know the tide. This is why authentic pukas cost more and why supply is limited.

How to Spot a Real Puka Shell vs a Fake

Six tells, in order of reliability:

    1. The hole is off-centre and irregular. The ocean does not drill perfect holes. If every bead has a perfectly centred round hole, it was made by a machine.
    2. Each shell is slightly different in size and shape. Ocean-worn shells cannot be uniform. If every bead is identical, they are cut chips, not natural pukas.
    3. The colour has warmth to it. Real pukas are creamy off-white with faint yellow, pink, or grey tones from the shell's natural pigment. Uniform bleach-white beads are usually processed shell or plastic.
    4. The edges feel worn, not sharp. Ocean smoothing takes years and leaves a rounded, slightly soft edge. Machine-cut edges feel crisp.
    5. The weight is right. Real shell has a distinct feel, light but substantial, not plasticky. A plastic imitation feels almost weightless.
    6. Origin transparency. Genuine puka sellers will tell you where the shells came from. Vague sourcing is a warning sign.

Puka vs Shell Chip: Both Have Their Place

Shell chips are not fakes in the fraud sense. They are a legitimate category of jewellery, often beautiful, and they last a long time. They just are not what the Hawaiians meant by puka. If you love the look and the price point of shell chip strands, wear them without guilt. If you specifically want the traditional puka experience, look for language like authentic Hawaiian puka, natural puka, or ocean-worn puka and confirm with the seller.

How to Clean a Puka Shell Necklace

Puka shells are natural, porous, and delicate. Aggressive cleaning will damage them. Do this instead:

    1. Rinse with lukewarm fresh water after any exposure to salt, chlorine, sweat, or lotion.
    2. Wipe gently with a soft cloth. Microfibre or an old cotton t-shirt works.
    3. For deeper cleaning, use a very mild soap. A single drop of gentle hand soap in a bowl of water, dip and swirl briefly, then rinse thoroughly.
    4. Never use bleach, alcohol, or jewellery cleaner. These will dull the natural surface and can dissolve the shell itself.
    5. Air dry fully before storing. Trapped moisture between shells can cause discolouration over time.

How to Store a Puka Shell Necklace

    • Lay flat, do not hang. Hanging puts stress on the stringing over time.
    • Store away from direct sunlight. Prolonged UV can bleach the natural pigment.
    • Keep dry. Humidity is fine occasionally but consistent damp storage will slowly degrade the shell.
    • Separate from other jewellery. Metal chains can scratch the shell surface.

Wearing Rules That Extend the Life

    • Put it on last when getting dressed. After perfume, moisturiser, sunscreen. All of those are hard on porous shells.
    • Take it off for swimming pools. Chlorine is much harsher on shell than the ocean is. Ironic, but true.
    • Take it off for sleep. Not necessary, but extends the life of the stringing.
    • Restring when needed. Every few years, depending on wear, the cord will loosen or fray. A local jeweller can restring most pieces for a small fee.

    Why the Authenticity Question Matters

It is not just about being technically correct. The whole meaning of the puka shell (protection, survival, luck) comes from the fact that only the ocean decides which shells make it. A machined imitation cannot carry that story. Both objects are pretty. Only one is a talisman.
