Your Zodiac Birthstone Guide: What Stone Should You Wear?

Two ways to pick your stone: by the month you were born, or by your zodiac sign. Here's the full table for both, plus what each one is said to do.

There are two overlapping traditions for choosing a stone that matches you personally: birth month, and zodiac sign. They come from different sources (birthstones from the twelve stones on the breastplate of the biblical High Priest, zodiac stones from ancient astrological texts) but they end up telling similar stories. Here is the plain guide to both, and how to know which stone actually belongs on your body.

    Birthstones by Month

The modern list of birthstones was standardised in 1912 by American jewellers, drawing from centuries of European and Middle Eastern tradition. Some months have more than one official stone because supply, cost, and preference shifted over the decades.

    • January, Garnet. Protection, strength, safe travel. The traveller's stone.
    • February, Amethyst. Calm, clarity, sobriety. The thinker's stone.
    • March, Aquamarine. Courage, communication, calm under pressure. The sailor's stone.
    • April, Diamond. Clarity, invincibility, love. The unbreakable stone.
    • May, Emerald. Rebirth, love, wisdom. The stone of spring itself.
    • June, Pearl, Moonstone, or Alexandrite. Purity, intuition, transformation.
    • July, Ruby. Passion, courage, vitality. The stone of the heart on fire.
    • August, Peridot or Sardonyx. Strength, confidence, protection from nightmares.
    • September, Sapphire. Wisdom, royalty, divine favour. The stone of truth.
    • October, Opal or Tourmaline. Creativity, inspiration, emotional balance.
    • November, Topaz or Citrine. Abundance, warmth, manifestation. The prosperity stone.
    • December, Turquoise, Tanzanite, or Blue Zircon. Wisdom, healing, communication, sacred protection.

    Zodiac Sign Stones

Astrological stones map to sun signs rather than calendar months. Some overlap with birthstones, some do not.

    • Aries (Mar 21 to Apr 19). Bloodstone, Carnelian. Fire, drive, courage.
    • Taurus (Apr 20 to May 20). Emerald, Rose Quartz. Grounded love, patient strength.
    • Gemini (May 21 to Jun 20). Agate, Citrine. Curiosity, versatility, quick thinking.
    • Cancer (Jun 21 to Jul 22). Moonstone, Pearl. Intuition, emotion, tides.
    • Leo (Jul 23 to Aug 22). Peridot, Tiger's Eye. Confidence, warmth, courage.
    • Virgo (Aug 23 to Sep 22). Sapphire, Carnelian. Wisdom, discernment, focus.
    • Libra (Sep 23 to Oct 22). Opal, Lapis Lazuli. Balance, harmony, truth.
    • Scorpio (Oct 23 to Nov 21). Topaz, Obsidian. Transformation, deep truth, protection.
    • Sagittarius (Nov 22 to Dec 21). Turquoise, Amethyst. Freedom, adventure, wisdom.
    • Capricorn (Dec 22 to Jan 19). Garnet, Onyx. Discipline, resilience, focus.
    • Aquarius (Jan 20 to Feb 18). Amethyst, Amazonite. Vision, individuality, calm.
    • Pisces (Feb 19 to Mar 20). Aquamarine, Amethyst. Intuition, dreaming, empathy.

Birthstone or Zodiac Stone: Which Do You Choose?

If you feel more connected to the calendar (birthdays, anniversaries, month-of-birth energy), go birthstone. If you feel more connected to astrology and your sun sign, go zodiac. If you feel connected to both, wear both. They compound rather than conflict.

There is also a third option a lot of people miss: the stone that feels right regardless of which list it came from. Traditional wisdom holds that the stone chooses the person. If you keep being drawn to a stone that is not yours by month or sign, that pull is meaningful too.

How to Actually Wear Your Stone

Constant contact is the traditional rule. A ring or a bracelet stays touching skin all day; a pendant taps against the chest when you move. Both work. What matters is that you notice the stone during the day, and let it be a small reminder of the energy you chose it for.
